Pennsylvania Nursing Information
The Pennsylvania Center for Health Careers' Nursing Committee, formerly the Clinical Education Committee, is composed of RN educators, LPN educators, employers and representatives of related associations and interest groups. In 2006, the committee completed work on a comprehensive recommendation report titled “Increasing Pennsylvania's Clinical Education Capacity.” The report outlines recommendations for increasing and improving the clinical experience for nursing students throughout the commonwealth in order to ensure a highly skilled and prepared workforce for the future. The co-chairs of this committee are Patty Knecht, director of practical nursing for the Chester County Intermediate Unit's Center for Arts and Technology, Brandywine Campus and Dr. Helen Burns, associate dean of clinical education for the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing.
In working to implement the 2006 report's recommendations, the committee is concentrating its efforts on gathering and analyzing data related to the growing nursing faculty shortage in Pennsylvania. The group is collaborating with the Pennsylvania Center for Health Careers' Supply & Demand Workgroup to evaluate the seriousness of the shortage and develop ways to address the problem. Additionally, the committee was recently granted approval for the funding of a $750,000 proposal to help increase the supply and pipeline of LPNs in Pennsylvania. This initiative is in the beginning stages, and is expected to be completed in 2011.
